After a historic appearance in the first division for only their second time in history, Spezia Calcio seemed to be on the uprise. New signings, new manager, new investors, new hopes and dreams. The new manager’s vision of mixing young and experienced players paid off from the start.

A controversial new logo, but an even more controversial player had arrived:

Super Mario Balotelli

Balotelli came at a time when the club needed experience, leadership, and an idol.  Did he represent all these things? Maybe not. The press and fans were quick to call out the new owners’ decisions.  After bouncing from team to team due to bad form, issues with discipline and a rockstar mentality he was the last person anyone thought Spezia would sign.  He came from Bologna FC on a free transfer after a short spell.  The usual reasons to blame.  This time it was different though.  It is said Balotelli had hired a new manager/life coach and was on a new path.  He was no longer interested in money and fame.  For the first time in his career, HE chose where he wanted to play and it happened to be the small club from La Spezia Italy that made him fall in love with football all over again.

It was the last few weeks of the league.  Spezia had reached the 2nd position on the table.  Balotelli and Cancellieri were on fire.  A couple of new signings had only strengthened the team.  They were about to fight for the league title.  They were only 2 points from the leader.  Then, tragedy struck.  A scandal broke out that left players and manager in disbelief.  The press began to filter information about a possible club violation.  The report stated that the club owners had ties to ” La Cosa Nostra ” and had used their power to bypass several legalities regarding financial expenses and new player signings.  This directly involved a young center back named Daniel Barcia. The federation then decided to make an example of Spezia Calcio.  The club would not be able to use the young center back for the remainder of the season.  They were then handed a loss for their last match stripping them of the three points putting them on top of the league.  Lastly, came the hardest blow.  Spezia Calcio was to be relegated to division 3 at the end of the season.

Just like that, hopes, dreams, and glory disappeared.  The board issued apologies to the club and fans.  Some of the investors faced legal punishment.  Balotelli was the first to issue a press release stating he was devastated and thanked the fanbase for an incredible season.  He assured he would not leave the club when they need him the most, like many players do. Instead, he offered his loyalty and promise they would soon be back.  As he stood up to leave, he left the press room with one statement:

” Why Always Me? “
